back to square one

I’m currently in a bit of a transitional phase with my music, having amassed about 1,000 CDs over the past decade. I’ve gone through phases of digitising them, which was quite helpful at one point.

Many of the mixes on my website were created using some of that collection. However, my laptop got rather messed up, and all my files got mixed up. I tried syncing them using iTunes and Apple Music, but iTunes has this odd feature called iTunes Match that tries to help you store your music on the cloud.

The problem is that if you have high-quality files like WAV or AIFF, it actually swaps them for AAC files, which are not very good. It really messed up my library, so I ended up deleting everything and took a break from digital music for a while. I cancelled my Apple Music subscription and started using CDs again.

I bought myself a few old-fashioned Pioneer CDJ 800, used them for a couple of years and enjoyed doing it. It was nice to have the tactile experience, but it became clear, especially when playing gigs and doing other things, that it's just not as practical using physical media.

That’s why I’m now digitising my collection, which is taking a long time and can be a bit of a chore. However, it is definitely making me reflect on the music I’ve collected over the past decade and revisit a few pieces, which is nice.

I’m looking forward to seeing how I can repurpose this music, listen to it, blend it, sample it, share it and see what I can do to bring it to people's ears.
